About the Healthy for Life Campaign


CAMPAIGN BACKGROUND

St. Joseph Health System (SJHS) has partnered with American Academy of Pediatrics to fight childhood obesity with the creation of the Healthy For Life (H4L) campaign, which focuses on getting kids and their families to develop healthy lifestyle choices by incorporating both physical activity and a responsible diet.

Healthy For Life is a comprehensive social and healthcare outreach initiative. This campaign focuses on the following:

  • Address the environment issues
    • Community
    • Schools
    • Grocery Stores
    • Home
  • Communicate to stakeholders
    • Parents
    • Students
    • Teachers
    • School administrators

As part of Healthy For Life, more 2,500 students in 74 Orange County schools participate in a free, curriculum-based physical education program that instills the importance of fitness and nutrition to obtain optimum and long-lasting healthy results. This year, it also expanded to Napa and Apple Valley with more than 160 students participating. A physician and dietician from one of the SJHS local hospitals go to each participating school to help educate the students. 

For the nutritional component of Healthy For Life, SJHS has partnered with celebrity Mexican food chefs Jaime Martín del Campo and Ramiro Arvizu, owners of the award-winning restaurant La Casita Mexicana, to developed a series of recipes for children and their families that are easy, taste great and healthy.
SJHS also partnered with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for a back to school promotions that distributed 15,000 H4L backpacks at the August 29th home game. As part of the collaboration, SJHS also has a H4L commercial running at the home games on the stadium’s jumbo television screen.
 

The following communication tools were developed to promote the campaign:

  • Videos with the chefs highlighting the health benefits of the Healthy For Life Recipes were produced to be used as educational materials on healthy eating.
  • This interactive Web Site developed as an informational tool that has an online resource guide with a list of community clinics; Healthy For Life toolkit which includes an overview of the Healthy For Life Campaign ; the recipes; Healthy Lifestyle tips for families; family medical timeline – when to get shots, test, etc.; and a list of SJHS hospitals and community clinics. Other new media tools developed include a Facebook page, YouTube channel and a Twitter account.
